By Arthur Wesley Dow
Arthur Wesley Dow (1857–1922) was an American artist, educator, and influential theorist whose ideas helped shape modern art in the United States. Deeply inspired by Japanese aesthetics—particularly the principles he studied in Hokusai’s Manga—Dow rejected the traditional academic focus on realism and anatomical accuracy. Instead, he emphasized composition, design, and the harmonious arrangement of line, mass, and color. His landmark book Composition (1899) became a foundational text, encouraging artists to see nature not as something to copy literally but as a source of abstract forms and visual balance.
