In Les vieux ormes du champ du puits à Marzy (“The Old Elms of the Well Field at Marzy”), Auguste Mathieu depicts a tranquil rural landscape marked by the solemn grandeur of two ancient elm trees. Beneath their vast, timeworn branches, women and children pause to rest, while in the distance, a farmer guides his oxen along a sunlit path. The composition blends human presence and natural monumentality in perfect balance — an ode to the serene rhythms of provincial life.
Mathieu’s etching demonstrates both technical mastery and poetic sensibility. His meticulous linework captures the intricate textures of bark, foliage, and ground, while his subtle modulation of light creates an atmosphere of pastoral intimacy.
