Raffet, a pupil of Gros and one of the greatest French lithographers of the 19th century, was admired for his ability to combine military precision with the vitality of popular life. His travels through Eastern Europe and the Balkans in the 1840s provided a wealth of material for such compositions, which resonated with the Romantic fascination for foreign lands and customs.
Condition: Light foxing and age toning, primarily in the margins; central image well-preserved with strong contrasts.
