About the Item

Lithograph on wove paper. Signed and dated in the plate. Image dimension: 16x27 cm. This finely executed lithograph by Auguste Raffet, one of the foremost French lithographers of the 19th century, presents a rare and evocative glimpse into the daily life of Kirghiz-Tatar communities. The composition depicts a solemn procession of children, guided to their village school, their distinctive traditional attire carefully rendered with Raffet’s masterful draughtsmanship. In the foreground, a shepherd figure with his loyal hound sits amidst a flock, observing the procession, while women and children engage in conversation to the right. The scene blends ethnographic interest with Raffet’s characteristic precision, combining documentary authenticity with a poetic sensibility. Part of Raffet’s celebrated Crimean and Eastern travel series, this print reflects the artist’s fascination with foreign customs and his role in disseminating images of distant cultures to a European audience. The sheet shows expected age toning and scattered foxing, consistent with its age, yet the impression remains strong with rich, delicate tonal contrasts.
