About the Item

Lithograph on wove paper, realized in 1844. Image dimension 19x37 cm. Signed and dated on plate. This lithograph by Auguste Raffet offers a striking interior view of a Crimean Tatar congregation at prayer inside a mosque. Rows of men are depicted kneeling in unified posture beneath a timber-beamed ceiling adorned with geometric motifs, while daylight filters through the arched windows illuminating the ornate wall decorations. A single imam stands before the mihrab, leading the service. The work exemplifies Raffet’s ethnographic approach and his interest in the cultural and religious life of the peoples he encountered during his travels in the Crimea, particularly around the time of the Crimean War. His precision in architectural and costume detail is complemented by a subtle atmospheric rendering, making this both a historical document and an evocative Orientalist composition. Even foxing present on both recto and verso, especially around the margins; image field clean, with good tonal depth and detail; slight handling wear.
