In Dans les Pyrénées (“In the Pyrenees”), Augustin André Lançon captures a striking encounter between two bears amidst the rugged grandeur of a mountain landscape. The etching reflects both his naturalist precision and his deep empathy for the animal world — qualities that would later define his celebrated work as a painter, engraver, and illustrator of the Franco-Prussian War.
Lançon’s fine, confident linework and sensitive rendering of texture demonstrate the artist’s training as a draughtsman and his fascination with natural history. The bears, monumental yet calm, are set within a vividly described wilderness of rock and trees, evoking both the majesty and fragility of untamed nature.
