Boris Deutsch
Boris Deutsch (1892-1978) was a 20th century modernist figurative painter and printmaker. He was born in Krasnagorka, Lithuania on June 4, 1892. Deutsch began drawing at age five and remained a self-taught artist, except for brief intervals at the Bloom Academy of Art in Riga, Latvia and the Kunstgewerbe Schule in Berlin. He moved to Seattle, WA in 1916 and then to Los Angeles in 2019. He began his career as a commercial art and set designer for movies. In the late 1930's he was recruited to paint murals for the New Deal, WPA, receiving numerous mural commissions to paint murals for the treasury department and several post office buildings. In 1941 he won the large competition to decorate the Terminal Annex Post Office in Los Angeles with eleven large murals. During the last decade of his life he experimented with monotypes and other printmaking techniques. Deutsch died in Los Angeles on Jan. 16, 1978. Boris Deutsch's art has been the focus of many exhibitions, including: The University of California, Los Angeles in 1926, The Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1930, Oakland Art Gallery in 1937, The University of Southern California (USC) in 1939, The Whitney Museum in New York in 1946 and a centennial exhibition by the Judah l. Magnes Museum in Berkeley California in 1992. In 1955, Marc Chagall called him the greatest Jewish artist of our time. Deutch's works are held by several institutions and museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Scribal Museum, the Judah L. Magnes Museum Berkeley, California, and the Pomona College Museum of Art.

Beautiful mid-1980's hand colored Art Deco style lithograph by Southern California artist John Luke Eastman (American, b.1929). In this 1984 version of Eastman's "Three Ribbon Heads", a delicate flowing line drawing of three consecutive women's faces in profile are framed by ribbons in a circular composition. As in many of the artist's works, Eastman captions the piece with the following phrase: " In this life we have three lasting qualities...faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of them is love."
Hand signed and dated in pencil lower right, "John L. Eastman 84" artists proof.
Displayed in a light grey mat and new art deco-style giltwood frame.

Claus Sievert, (American, 1949–2009) nicknamed “The Tree Guy," was a German-born American printmaker and illustrator, who studied etching in an art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. He began his career as an art teacher in Germany, teaching printmaking, art history, advertising design, and visual communication, and became a full-time artist in 1981.
Sievert created limited-edition etchings from copper plates and a hand-turned press which he then individually hand-colored.
Sievert’s work won awards, illustrated a children’s book by Leo Tolstoy, was commissioned by the Sierra Club and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to illustrate their publications, and he had his images published in several calendars. As a soldier in World War II, he survived where millions perished. Upon returning to his home town of Odessa, felt abandoned and alone. He studied Art and Architecture in Odessa, but, one of a number of Russian Jewish artists allowed to emigrate, he left for America when the opportunity arose. He settled in New York City, a choice that has forever impacted his oeuvre. Many of his pictures depict New York cityscapes and lifestyle; however, they remain typically Russian. His subject matter often comes from memory and includes the life that he left behind, family, and friends. Drawing upon his Jewish heritage for inspiration, Shenker also paints historical events, such as "On the Eve of the Assault" in which he portrayed the last night before the destruction of Jerusalem. He has also illustrated a number of classics of Russian literature including Alexander Pushkin. His use of imagination also applies to the figures in his expressionist paintings—fictional characters such as the Spanish literary character Don Quixote make appearances in his work. He has also placed figures such as Rembrandt and Picasso in modern settings: in "Rembrandt Visiting our Family," Shenker sits his most favored artist at his family table, in a tribute to someone he describes as a "peoples artist." He is one in a long line of great Soviet Russian Judaica Jewish artists beginning with Yehuda Pen, who founded Russia's first art school for Jews in Vitebsk in 1897 continuing with his students, including Marc Chagall and El Lissitzky, Natan Altman, Leon Bakst and Robert Falk...
