About the Item
Etching on laid paper
Signed in plate lower left: B. Zaleski
Published by Cadart
Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris
With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin
In Partie du Colysée à Rome, Bronislaw Zaleski offers a monumental and deeply atmospheric vision of one of antiquity’s most iconic ruins. The artist captures the interior of the Colosseum’s substructure, where crumbling arches, weathered masonry, and shafts of filtered light conjure both the grandeur and decay of ancient Rome. A solitary figure—dwarfed by the massive architectural forms—introduces a human scale that heightens the sense of awe and introspection.
Zaleski’s etching demonstrates a superb command of linear precision and spatial depth. Through a masterful orchestration of light and shadow, he evokes the silent majesty of stone and the inexorable passage of time. His treatment of texture—from the rough-hewn brick to the encroaching foliage reclaiming the ruins—reflects both documentary accuracy and Romantic sensibility.
Excellent impression on laid paper with wide margins. Minor traces of time toning to the sheet, otherwise pristine and well-preserved.
Bronislaw Zaleski, a Polish exile and artist active in France, was an accomplished printmaker known for his architectural and landscape etchings. Associated with the Société des Aquafortistes, he produced a series of works depicting classical and historical monuments across Europe. His etchings combine archaeological rigor with the poetic melancholy characteristic of Romantic art. Partie du Colysée à Rome stands as one of his most technically and emotionally resonant plates, embodying both reverence for antiquity and meditation on the endurance of human achievement amid ruin.
