About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: Zaleski Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Une leçon de lecture à Orenbourg, Bronislaw Zaleski captures an intimate domestic moment in the Russian East, revealing both ethnographic observation and human warmth. Within a modest interior, three figures—a venerable teacher, his pupil, and a small child—are gathered in concentration over an open book. Their traditional garments, patterned textiles, and the subdued light evoke an atmosphere of quiet dignity and cultural continuity. Zaleski’s etched line is sensitive and deeply descriptive. The textures of fabric, wood, and metal are rendered with remarkable fidelity, while the faces—particularly that of the elder, absorbed in his task—convey serenity and wisdom. The composition’s triangular arrangement reinforces the theme of generational transmission, turning this scene of learning into a visual parable of heritage and devotion. Excellent impression on laid paper with full margins. Very slight toning in the wide border; plate in pristine state with rich black ink and fine detail. Bronislaw Zaleski was a Polish artist and exile active in France, renowned for his etchings of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. A close associate of fellow émigré Józef Szymon Kurowski and linked to the Société des Aquafortistes, Zaleski combined topographical accuracy with poetic humanism. His works, often inspired by his years of political exile in Russia, illuminate the daily life and customs of distant peoples with empathy and restraint. Une leçon de lecture à Orenbourg exemplifies his refined draftsmanship and his rare capacity to blend ethnographic precision with spiritual depth.
