Carlo Casanova was born in Crema on 21 June 1871.
The family, originally from the Lodi area, was in Crema because the father had a position as president of the local court. At the age of 10 he was orphaned, first by his father, shortly after by his mother. Along with him there is also a younger sister, to whom he remained attached forever.
The loneliness of his childhood and early youth, however, has great importance for the formation of the artist’s character and inner sensitivity. After the death of his parents, he is entrusted to a tutor, an honest and scrupulous man, who would like to direct him towards a promising degree course for the future, even if this could compromise Carlo’s interest in painting.
He attended the Barnabiti college in Moncalieri, where he met his first painting teacher, the Tedeschi of Turin, who, recognizing the young man’s particular talent, led him to meet the world of art. After completing his studies in Moncalieri and still under the wing of his tutor, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Padova and finished it in 1895. But throughout his university studies, his passion for painting and drawing remained live: often on the back of his studio projects, there are free designs and sketches.
Once the degree is obtained, the tutor lets his pupil follow his true aspirations. Now Carlo is free to practice art and starts painting full time, as a pupil of his friend Stefano Bersani. He moves to Milan where he meets the world of art. Here he discovers the full bohèmienne atmosphere of the Scapigliatura: made up of bizarre characters, writers, poets, painters, sculptors, dramatists, actors, with the inspiring muses.
In a short time, Casanova becomes a protagonist of this world, managing to dampen his innate shyness. A few years later, during a holiday at the Foci di Magra, in Lunigiana, he feels a strong understanding of ideas and inspiration with the painter Aldo Carpi.
In 1903, following his hermitages in the Alps, he happened to be in Quarna, a small mountain town above Lake Orta, and this place became fundamental for his development as a romantic artist. The cherry trees in bloom whose wood is really a source of work for the artisans and makers of musical instruments who live in Quarna, together with the picturesque thatched-roof houses of this village in the woods, become for Casanova the most pleasant place to give life to his drawings and inspire his landscapes. The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island."
Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master.
In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay.
In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...

Aegidius Sadeler II Engraving "Petronia, First Wife of Vitellius, Roman Emperor"
By Aegidius Sadeler II

Artist: Aegidius Sadeler II
Petronia, First Wife of Vitellius, from set of Roman Emperors and Empresses, c. 16th-17th century
Engraving
Publisher: Marcus Christoph Sadeler
Sight: 15 1/4 x 10 3/4 in.
Framed: 19 3/4 x 15 1/4 x 1 in.
This image was conceived in the 16th century by Aegidius Sadeler II and published by Marcus Christoph Sadeler. It is unclear when the present version was executed.
Aegidius Sadeler or Aegidius Sadeler II[1] (1570–1629) was a Flemish engraver who was principally active at the Prague court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and his successors. Sadeler was born in Antwerp in the Sadeler family of print dealers and engravers. He was the son of Emmanuel de Sayeleer and the nephew of Aegidius I, Jan I en Raphael Sadeler.[2] He was trained by his uncle Jan I and became a member of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1589. He was active in Munich the next year in 1590, in Rome in 1593, in Naples and then again in Munich in 1594–1597. From 1597 he settled in Prague where he became court engraver for Rudolf II and made engraved portraits of notables and engravings after artworks there, most notably paintings by Bartholomeus Spranger, Roelant Savery, Hans von Aachen, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and sculptures by Giambologna and Adriaen de Vries.
His early engravings were mostly faithful copies of works by Albrecht Dürer in the Imperial collection and copies of paintings by notable Italian painters such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Barocci and Titian or by Northern painters who worked there, such as Paul Bril and Denys Calvaert. In Prague he also engraved portraits of the notables of Rudolf's court, and collaborated with Spranger, Joseph Heintz the Elder, Jacobus Typotius and his friend Anselmus Boece de Boodt (1550-1632), Rudolf II's gemologist and physician.[3]
After Rudolf II died he enjoyed the favour and protection of the two succeeding Emperors, Matthias and Ferdinand II.[4][5] According to Michael Bryan...
