About the Item

This mezzotint presents a dense, intimate tangle of human hands, emerging from a deep, velvety darkness characteristic of the medium. The hands overlap and interlock in a tight, almost circular composition, creating a sense of compression and physical immediacy. Some hands are clenched into fists, others open or partially cupped, suggesting contrasting gestures of tension and vulnerability. The modeling is highly tactile: the artist emphasizes knuckles, tendons, veins, and creases, giving the hands a sculptural weight and a strong sense of corporeal presence. Light seems to skim across the skin from an unseen source, pulling individual fingers and palms out of shadow while allowing other forms to dissolve back into darkness. This chiaroscuro effect heightens the emotional charge and reinforces the mezzotint’s hallmark softness and depth. There is an ambiguity to the interaction—these hands may be grasping, supporting, restraining, or seeking connection. The lack of faces or bodies removes narrative specificity, allowing the image to function symbolically. It can be read as an exploration of human touch, dependence, struggle, intimacy, or instinct, with the repeated motif of grasping suggesting both need and control. Overall, the image feels psychological and visceral, using the richness of mezzotint to transform a simple anatomical subject into a meditation on human contact and the expressive power of hands alone. Signed and numbered in pencil from the edition of 20. Clasped hands in a moody masculine setting. Carrie Lingscheit originally hails from South Dakota, where her love of printmaking was galvanized through involvement in several Frogman’s summer print workshops. She received her BFA from the University of South Dakota in 2006, and her MFA from Ohio University in 2010. Carrie has exhibited nationally, participated in dozens of national and international exchange portfolios, and attended numerous national print conferences. She currently lives and works in Alexandria, Virginia. Artist Statement: "Human experience is plagued by an inherent incompleteness—both perception and memory being naturally imperfect, undeniably inexact. It is in our nature to yearn for completion, for narrative wholeness—to seek to fill in the gaps. Craving familiarity, we long to connect ourselves with other people through shared experience. Memories expressed by one person may reanimate long-forgotten details and events for others as their minds strive to forge these connections and to satisfy these voids.
