Claude Weisbuch
Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France in 1927 and was a pupil at L' École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, France. As a painter, engraver, and exceptional lithographer, Claude Weisbuch has painted active motifs, such as musicians, horses, and characters. Dominating in his work, by the relief and the velvety line which characterizes drypoint, his etchings are the strongest representations of his figures, intensely lively after the 1960s. Using dark tones which express his sharp sense, Claude Weisbuch ceaselessly captures life's dynamics, as the pictorial, musical and literary expressions that are essentially human. Whether it is the impassioned violinist, the mercurial actor, or the sitter shrouded with silent intensity, they have all been rendered with Weisbuch's love for drama. The brushstrokes are sweeping and bold while the paint is fluid. His pictures, full of movement, give one the impression of time-lapsed motion and display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a unique energy. Weisbuch has been quoted as saying “I like the sketch, the uncompleted, the painting filled with mystery,”. "Some important things to look for in evaluating an artist for such a position of honour are: an inventiveness of style, a prolific output, and a consistency of quality--Claude Weisbuch has all three. His style is unique with a color range that is rich and warm in tone, certainly equal to that of Rembrandt. The fluidity of line and creation of motion is even more vigorous than in the work of Daumier or Toulouse Lautrec. His creativeness in composition is awesome and seems to have infinite possibilities of variation and vision." - David Barnett

Pietro Morando (Alessandria 1889- 1980). He occasionally studies at the Albertina Academy in Turin; a scholarship (1913) allows him to enroll in painting courses at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. He meets Angelo Morbelli whose studio he frequents and temporarily shares the passion for pointillism. His love for drawing led him to produce numerous works, even using the poor means of luck that the First World War allowed him. He thus realizes tragic war drawings (almost a reportage) which will then be published in the volume "The Giants", with the presentation of the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi of Casale Monferrato. For decades he frequented the Milanese studio of Carlo Carrà, with whom he shares, as well as friendship, also comparisons and cultural exchanges in the field of painting. It stands out for its simple and incisive style and intense color and decisive features, with which it gives strength and life, but also poetry, to its subjects, almost always the poor people, porters, and peasants, as well as glimpses of his city and Monferrato countryside. He exhibits at the Turin Promoter since 1920 and participates in the Rome Quadriennale and the Milan Triennale. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1924, 1926, 1928, 1932, 1934, 1948, 1950, 1956. The exhibitions at the promoter of the fifties were held together with the younger Alexandrian Franco Sassi, a pupil of Bozzetti and a great admirer of the painter in question. Morando's works can be found at the Italian War History...

Will's formal art education began with classes at the Chicago Academy
of Fine Arts. As a student at the city's Steinmetz High School,
Petersen succeeded Hugh Hefner (of Playboy magazine fame) as the HS
newspaper cartoonist, the Steinmetz Star. During this time, Petersen
recovered from polio.
In 1947 Petersen enrolled at Chicago's Wilbur Wright College. While
there, he painted with oils for the first time. Two years later he
enrolled at Michigan State University where he developed a strong
interest in literature and writing and began printmaking. By 1951 he
had begun to exhibit paintings and prints nationally. A year later he
completed his master's degree.
Petersen served in the United States Army from 1952-54, spending one
year as an education specialist in Japan. This encounter with the
Japanese culture affected his entire life. He became interested in
calligraphy and Noh, classical Japanese Buddhist performance that
combines elements of drama, music and poetry. Upon completion of his
military service in Japan in 1955, Will Petersen settled in Oakland,
California, where he met some of the most active poets of the Beat
Generation: Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Phil Whalen,
Mike McClure and others. Petersen was attracted to the group by their
intelligence and belief in Zen Buddhism.
In 1956 in his small studio in Oakland, he printed the poems of Jack
Kerouac. He attended for the first time, the reading of Ginsberg's
Howl at Six Gallery. His relationship with Gary Snyder had begun when
both were in Kyoto, Japan; later Snyder wrote for the Plucked Chicken.
Petersen returned to Japan in 1957, pursuing painting, printmaking and
writing for eight years while living in Kyoto. In 1965 he accepted a
faculty appointment at Ohio State University, teaching drawing,
painting and printmaking. Four years later Petersen took his teaching
skills to West Virginia University in Morgantown, where he
concentrated on printmaking. He taught there until 1977 when he began
publishing Plucked Chicken, a journal of art and poetry. In 1978 in
Morgantown, Petersen and his wife, Cynthia Archer, established Plucked
Chicken Press, which they later moved to Chicago and then Evanston.
Petersen operated the Press until his death on April 1, 1994.
1956 In storefront studio in Oakland, California, creates serigraphs
