This finely executed etching by Edmond Ulm, Brandt découvrant le phosphore (“Brandt Discovering Phosphorus”), depicts the German alchemist Hennig Brandt at the moment of his discovery of phosphorus in 1669. The scene captures a defining episode in early modern science — the transformation of mystical alchemy into empirical chemistry.
