About the Item
Drypoint printed in dark brown on heavy cream wove paper with wide margins. This is the third state (of four) from a small edition of only several. Signed and inscribed "II Zustand" in pencil by Kirchner with the artist's ink stamp on verso. This extremely scarce print is richly-inked and in excellent condition.
The plate size is 7.5 inches x 9.63 inches. The sheet is partially covered by the matting but the sheet dimensions up to the matting is 9.25 inches x 11.5 inches.
It was discovered that there were more than two states of this print. Technically there were three states, but Kirchner made a very minor adjustment to the third plate, so in his mind there were only two states which is why he inscribed this impression "Second State" in German.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (6 May 1880 – 15 June 1938) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the artists group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for army service in the First World War, but soon suffered a breakdown and was discharged. His work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis in 1933, and in 1937 more than 600 of his works were sold or destroyed.
