About the Item
This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Federico Barocci (c.1535–1612), titled Tete d enfant (Head of a child), originates from the 1968 folio Visages d Enfants. Fifteen Drawings from Durer to Dufy from the Collections of the National Museums), published by Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, Paris, and Daniel Jacomet, Editeur, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1968. The composition conveys Baroccis extraordinary sensitivity to youth, emotion, and tonal modeling, translated through twentieth century printmaking with remarkable fidelity to the spirit and intimacy of the original drawing.
Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, archivally hinged on a velin support sheet as issued, this work measures 18.5 x 14 inches overall, with the image measuring approximately 11.024 x 9.45 inches. About the Publication:
Visages d Enfants. Quinze Dessins de Durer a Dufy Appartenant aux Collections des Musees Nationaux, issued in 1968, represents a landmark achievement in Parisian printmaking devoted to the faithful translation of historic master drawings into modern pochoir and lithographic form. Conceived and published by Daniel Jacomet in collaboration with Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, the album inaugurated a series dedicated to rendering canonical drawings with extraordinary precision, respecting line weight, tonal subtlety, and the original spirit of each work. Jacomets atelier was internationally renowned for its technical rigor and scholarly approach, bridging museum collections and contemporary print culture through meticulous craftsmanship. Drawing together works spanning centuries, from Albrecht Durer to Raoul Dufy, the album reflects a curatorial ambition rooted in pedagogy, preservation, and aesthetic continuity. Produced in strictly limited examples, including a small number outside the trade, the album exemplifies the highest standards of mid twentieth century Parisian printmaking and remains valued for its role in transmitting the legacy of master draughtsmanship to collectors, institutions, and scholars.
About the Artist:
Federico Barocci (c.1535–1612) was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance and early Baroque whose radiant color, emotional immediacy, and innovative compositional fluidity positioned him as one of the most original and influential figures bridging the harmony of the High Renaissance with the expressive dynamism of the Baroque, a legacy whose visual intelligence can be conceptually traced even into the thinking of later modern innovators such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Working primarily in Urbino with significant engagement in Roman artistic circles, Barocci developed a highly personal style distinguished by luminous pastel palettes, vibrating light, soft contours, and psychologically nuanced figures that departed from the heroic monumentality of Michelangelo and Raphael while remaining deeply rooted in their classical achievements. Drawing inspiration from Correggio s atmospheric tenderness, Parmigianino s elegance, Venetian color traditions, and Renaissance humanism, he pioneered a working method centered on extensive preparatory drawings, oil sketches, and color studies, a process that proved revolutionary and directly influenced Annibale Carracci, the Carracci academy, and the rise of Baroque naturalism. Barocci transformed religious and mythological subjects into emotionally immersive experiences, infusing sacred narratives with movement, intimacy, and human vulnerability that profoundly shaped the development of Counter Reformation art and resonated with later masters including Peter Paul Rubens, Guido Reni, Domenichino, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. His sensitivity to color vibration, spatial rhythm, and expressive gesture anticipated concerns central to later figurative modernism and color driven abstraction, helping to redefine painting as a vehicle for psychological and emotional resonance rather than purely idealized form. His enduring historical and market significance is reflected in his highest auction record, achieved in January 2020 when a major painting sold for approximately 7.8 million USD at Sothebys London, confirming Federico Barocci s stature as one of the most important and sought after masters of the Italian Renaissance.
