About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: Bracquemond Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In La Mort de Mazanoff (Capitaine Français), Félix Bracquemond combines dramatic intensity with profound restraint to depict the solitary death of a French officer fallen in the snow. The composition is anchored by the stark contrast between the inert figure of Mazanoff in the foreground and the dimly lit rescuers approaching through the wintry darkness. Bracquemond’s masterful control of etching tones—his dense cross-hatching, and his layering of ink to evoke velvety blacks—infuses the scene with emotional gravity and quiet heroism. Rather than sensationalizing tragedy, Bracquemond captures a moment of silence and inevitability: the cold stillness of death within a vast, indifferent landscape. His use of chiaroscuro reflects the influence of Rembrandt, whom he deeply admired, while his treatment of nature as an expressive force anticipates Symbolist sensibilities that would emerge later in the century. Excellent impression on laid paper, with full margins. Slight surface tone and mild foxing in outer border; image rich and well-preserved. Félix Bracquemond was one of the most innovative and influential printmakers of 19th-century France. As a leading figure of the Société des Aquafortistes, he reinvigorated etching as a medium for original artistic expression. His circle included Manet, Corot, and Degas, and his experiments in tonal etching paved the way for modern printmaking. La Mort de Mazanoff is among Bracquemond’s most haunting works—an image of human solitude within the immensity of nature, realized with technical brilliance and profound emotional sensitivity.
