A sombre, emotive scene characteristic of Chifflart’s Romantic sensibility: a grieving mother and child are gathered in a windswept landscape beside a simple grave-cross. Chifflart’s incisive line and dense cross-hatching build a velvety chiaroscuro, letting the figures emerge from the surrounding gloom with striking psychological intensity. Produced during the heyday of the Paris etching revival, the print was issued by Cadart
Luquet for the Société des Aquafortistes, with whom Chifflart was a frequent exhibitor, alongside Bracquemond, Manet and Fantin-Latour.
Strong, even impression with rich blacks; broad margins; scattered light foxing/toning confined largely to the sheet edges and a few unobtrusive handling marks—overall very good condition.
A pupil of Ingres and a close admirer of Victor Hugo, Chifflart is celebrated for the dramatic intensity of his etched work (notably his illustrations to Faust). L’Affliction exemplifies his fusion of Romantic drama and graphic precision, and is an excellent example of the Société’s ambition to restore etching as an original, painterly art.
