About the Item

This exquisite woodcut after Georges Rouault (1871–1958), titled Le Christ en croix (Christ on the Cross), from the folio Les Peintres mes amis (The Painters My Friends), originates from the 1965 edition published by Editions d'art Les Heures Claires, Paris, and printed by Atelier Raymond Jacquet, Paris, May 20, 1965. Le Christ en croix (Christ on the Cross) reflects Rouault’s profound spiritual vision and moral intensity, rendered through bold contrasts and sculptural linework that evoke the radiance of stained glass. The composition conveys both anguish and transcendence, capturing the essence of Rouault’s lifelong meditation on faith, redemption, and the human condition. Executed as a woodcut on grand velin d'Arches paper, this work measures 15 x 11 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional standards of Editions d'art Les Heures Claires, Paris, and the master craftsmanship of Atelier Raymond Jacquet, Paris. About the Publication: The folio Les Peintres mes amis (The Painters My Friends), published in Paris in 1965 by Editions d'art Les Heures Claires, stands among the most ambitious postwar French printmaking collaborations. Conceived as a celebration of modern art’s greatest masters, the volume unites original graphic works by Rouault, Vlaminck, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Villon, Derain, Zadkine, Miro, and others, alongside critical essays by Andre Warnod. Each plate was executed under the supervision of Paris’s foremost ateliers—Mourlot Freres, Lucien Detruit, P.-J. Ballon, Manuel Robbe, and Raymond Jacquet—representing the finest techniques of lithography, etching, and woodcut. This luxurious folio exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of mid-20th-century French printing, merging text, image, and handcraft into a unified artistic statement. A triumph of the livre d’artiste tradition, it remains a vital record of the enduring creative dialogue between the painters, printers, and publishers who defined the visual culture of their time. About the Artist: Georges Rouault (1871–1958) was a French painter, printmaker, and stained-glass artist whose profound emotional intensity, luminous color palette, and moral vision made him one of the most original and spiritual figures in 20th-century modern art. Rooted in both the Symbolist and Fauvist movements, Rouault’s work transcended stylistic boundaries to express a deep empathy for humanity, exploring themes of suffering, compassion, faith, and redemption. Trained under the great Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Rouault absorbed Moreau’s emphasis on spirituality, imagination, and symbolism while forging his own bold visual language that combined the radiance of stained glass with the emotional realism of Rembrandt and the structural innovation of Paul Cezanne. His use of heavy black contours and radiant, jewel-toned color imbued his paintings with a sacred, timeless quality, whether depicting clowns, judges, or Christ figures—subjects through which he revealed the duality of sin and grace within the human condition. A leading participant in the Fauvist circle alongside Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Albert Marquet, Rouault’s art bridged expressive modern color with profound spiritual reflection. His contemporaries and peers included some of the most transformative artists of his era—Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—each of whom, in different ways, shared his commitment to reimagining form, feeling, and faith in modern art. Rouault’s work continues to be celebrated for its sincerity, moral depth, and technical mastery, earning a central place in major museum collections such as the Musee d’Orsay, the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The highest price ever paid for a Georges Rouault artwork is approximately $2.5 million USD, achieved in 2011 at Christie’s London for Le Dernier Roman du clown (circa 1917–1920). Il a été maltraité et opprimé et il n a pas ouvert la bouche - from "Miserere"
By Georges Rouault

Wonderful original etching with aquatint realized by Georges Rouault between 1916 and 1923, published as a suite in 1948. Sheet in perfect conditions. The artwork is part of the important suite Miserere realized by Rouault between 1917 and 1923, considered as the most important religious graphic of XX century. Il a été maltraité et opprimé et il n'a pas ouvert la bouche represents an episode of Christ's passion. Miserere suite is divided in two themes: religious and profane; one is linked to Christ's passion and the other is dedicated to the human event, to the pilgrimage of pain on earth, made even more tragic by war. In the 58 original plates, Rouault lingers on the conditions of humanity. Like few other contemporaries, Rouault represents man, placing him at the center of an absurd and squalid theater. Interesting the use of contrasts and the shapes of the figures with black outlines. In this artwork the figure of Christ is placed in the center facing down. Georges Rouault (Paris, 1871) has been an interesting exponent of French Expressionism...
