Black and white etching and burin on wire rod paper. I state on 2, before numbering. 13° table from the series “Idee Pittoresche sopra la Fuga in Egitto” by Giandomenico Tiepolo . Signed and dated on plate in a cartouche on the left central margin. Excellent impression with very fresh and bright ink and a sharp line.Thin margin over the plate’s outline; a light horizontal fold on the upper margin, and a light stain on the right. This is the thirteenth table of a series of 24 engravings made by the Venetian artist for the Prince Carlo Filippo of Greinffenklau, in which the same theme, that of the Flight into Egypt, is represented in a new and original way for each sheet. The series entitled "Pictorial Ideas on the Flight into Egypt of Jesus, Mary and Joseph" and published in 1753 in Würzburg is considered the etching masterpiece by Giandomenico Tiepolo. The date 1750, engraved on the left, certifies that this sheet was one of the first in the series engraved by the artist, and that it is the most similar-looking to the style of his father, Giambattista. It is also related to a painting with the same subject matter, but in the opposite direction, made by Giandomenico, now in Budapest. The etching represents the surreal break during the escape: the group rests under a palm tree; Our Lady sits on a Roman bas-relief and hugs her Baby Jesus. Behind her, Saint Joseph is unloading the donkey. References: A.
