Each artwork features a 19th-century racehorse alongside its jockey, portrayed with striking use of colour and a keen eye for character. In the first composition, a chestnut horse is shown being led across an open landscape by a gentleman in stylish rural dress, likely the owner. The jockey, seated confidently atop the animal, wears vivid blue silks. The lower right corner bears a faint signature, and the reverse of the canvas includes indistinct handwritten text, presumably of the horse’s name. The second painting shows another similarly hued racehorse, this time in profile, with its jockey dressed in bold yellow silks and a burgundy riding cap. The back of this canvas is clearly marked with the name ‘Red Robin’. Rich in colour and full of period charm, this matched pair of antique equestrian paintings would appeal to collectors of horse racing...
