About the Item
A rare and beautiful 18th century bible illustration by a female artist.
Engraving on cream laid paper with a "V" shaped watermark, 8 x 4 5/8 inches (204 x 124mm), uneven full to thread margins, printed on a page removed from a Latin bible. Verso has text in red and black ink featuring the psalm of Sabbato Sancto. There are two small expertly repaired edge tears along the right sheet edge on the verso, both occur outside of the plate mark. There is some light handling wear and minor surface soiling, all consistent with age.
Suor Isabella (born Elisabetta Piccini 1644-1732) was an Italian artist and nun who worked in the mediums of etching, engraving, and illustration. She was trained by her father, etcher and engraver Giacomo Piccini, who tutored Isabella in the style of the great masters including Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. Isabella became a Franciscan nun in 1666, joining the Convent of Santa Croce. Upon joining, she changed her name to Suor (Sister) Isabella. Prominent Italians commissioned works from her, including portraits and religious artworks, and Giovanni Antonio Remondini distributed her prints throughout Europe.
