The artist Jacques Villon (actually Gaston Emile Duchamp) was born on 31 July 1875 in Damville. He is the half-brother of the famous artists Marcel Duchamp and Raymond Duchamp-Villon. From 1894 to 1906, he worked as a caricaturist and illustrator for several magazines in Paris. During this time, he produced many posters and humorous cartoons. In 1906, he turned towards painting and was influenced by Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Along with his brother Marcel Duchamp, Albert Gleizes, Francis Picabia, and Juan Gris, he was a member of the group of French artists known as "Section d'Or" beginning in 1911. He produced around 700 paintings in the peace of the village of Puteaux near Paris. In the late 1940s, he was finally discovered by a gallery owner who helped him achieve success. His work is recognised for its interesting combinations and overlaps of Cubism, Impressionism, and Futurism. Villon died on 9 June 1963 in Puteaux.

Jacques Villon
Jacques Villon was born Gaston Duchamp in 1875. He was the oldest brother of the artists Marcel Duchamp, Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti and the sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon. Initially a law student, in 1894 he went to Paris to study art. It was there that he met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and other influential artists in Paris, and changed his name to Jacques Villon, after the poet. Villon made prints of some of the most well-known belle-époque portraits and genre scenes of the early twentieth century. Around 1911, he came under the influence of Picasso and other cubists, and became a leading exponent of the style, exhibiting in the 1913 Armory Show in New York. In 1922, the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune commissioned Villon to produce a series of color aquatints after 38 major nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings. This series included works by Pierre Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Amadeo Modigliani, Edouard Manet, Pierre Bonnard, and others. Artists who were alive at the time of the printing collaborated with Villon, and signed the prints. The project took ten years to complete. Several of these prints are valued highly today, and some went on to be reproduced by the Louvre Museum as photo-etchings. Villon's 'cubist' etchings, with their characteristic cross-hatching, are amongst the most renowned prints of the twentieth century. Jacques Villon's long career brought him fame. The diverse nature of his paintings, from end-of-the-century portraits to cubist and abstract styles to graphic works, made him a major figure in twentieth-century art. He was made a Grand Officer of the Légion d'Honneur, and upon his death in 1963, and he was given a state funeral.

Lovis Corinth was born on July 21, 1858, in the town of Tapiau in East Prussia (now Gwardejsk, Russia). While attending high school in Königsberg, he developed an interest in Greek and Roman mythology as well as the Christian stories of the Bible. From 1876, Lovis Corinth attended the art academy in Königsberg, where he studied under Otto Günther, who introduced him to Weimar plein air painting. In 1880, he transferred to the Munich Academy. Works from his Munich period demonstrate his orientation towards the naturalistic painting style of Wilhelm Leibl's circle.
In 1883, Lovis Corinth traveled to Italy with his father, and in 1884 he spent three months in Antwerp, where he took painting lessons from Paul Eugène Gorge. From 1884 to 1887, Corinth studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. The artist then traveled to Berlin, where he probably painted his first self-portrait in 1887/88, which was followed by numerous others over the years.
From 1891 to 1899, Corinth lived as a freelance painter in Munich, where he belonged to the Secession. After meeting Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow in the winter of 1898/99, he decided to move to Berlin, where he settled in 1901. Prior to this, his work "Salomé with the Head of John the Baptist...
