(35.7 x 24.1 cm) James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was an American-born artist who spent much of his career in Europe, particularly in London and Paris. After briefly attending West Point, he turned to art and studied in Paris, where he absorbed the influence of French Realism and Japanese aesthetics. Whistler was known for his sharp wit and combative personality, often embroiled in artistic and legal disputes, most famously his libel case against critic John Ruskin. Despite social controversies, he became a central figure in the international art world, forming friendships with leading artists and writers and influencing the Aesthetic Movement, which championed the idea of art for art’s sake. Whistler’s art is characterized by subtle tonal harmonies, atmospheric mood, and refined compositions that emphasize visual beauty over narrative content. His most famous work, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler’s Mother, exemplifies his approach: restrained in color, elegant in line, and quietly expressive. His “Nocturnes,” a series of moody nighttime landscapes set along the Thames, are celebrated for their poetic abstraction and hint at the direction later taken by Impressionists and Symbolists. Whether in painting, etching, or lithography, Whistler sought to capture sensation over detail, influencing modern art’s shift toward composition, tone, and the emotional resonance of form. James Whistler was an exceptionally skilled printmaker whose etchings and lithographs are celebrated for their subtle tonal effects and refined line. Early in his career, his etching series such as the French Set (1858) and Thames Set (1871) revealed his keen observational eye, capturing intimate street scenes, riverbanks, and architectural views with a sensitive, atmospheric touch. Whistler treated printmaking as an art form equal to painting, often experimenting with paper types, ink tones, and the amount of plate wiping to achieve variations in mood. His later Venetian etchings (1879–80) are particularly admired for their lyrical treatment of light and space, conveying the city’s delicate interplay of water, architecture, and air. Throughout his printmaking, Whistler emphasized harmony and nuance, creating works that are both technically masterful and poetically understated.

Only 15 lifetime impressions (in 2 states) were listed by Way; Goulding printed 38 impressions on 14 December 1903. The stone was erased in 1903. Printed on cream wove proofing paper. Monogrammed with the butterfly in the stone. A fine impression of this extremely rare lithograph.

Tedeschi, Stratis, and Spink write, page 366: As originally transferred to stone, the image includes trial marks made with a pointed crayon to the left of the sitter's shoulder. There is also a smudge at lower right below the image and a small stry mark upper right. Only one impression of this state has been located. Now in the Britigh Museum, London, it once belonged to Thomas Way and is illustrated in the Levy (1975) catalogue.' The impression illustrated above lacks the stray mark on the right, as the sheet is too small to accommodate it.
