About the Item

A richly hand-colored image with a counterstrike on the verso. London: Hannah Humphrey, 1804. Etching with hand coloring in watercolor on buff wove paper, 10 1/4 x 15 inches (260 x 381 mm), full margins. Lower left corner tear, vertical edge tear in the lower-right sheet edge, extending in to the image area. Colors are remarkably vibrant and rich. On the verso is a counterstrike printed in black ink by Gillray titled "Company shocked at a Lady getting up to Ring the Bell." According to the Library of Congress, the image depicts "A violent disturbance in a breakfast parlor. A woman stands to ring the bell-pull while the five men at the table react in horror, stumbling and knocking over items on the table as they attempt to stop her. The men are probably suitors of the woman."
