About the Item

Jean Carlu started his career as a professional poster-designer in 1919. He designed his first poster in art deco style for the film "The Kid " by Charlie Chaplin. Carlu was influenced by cubism and the works of Juan Gris and Albert Gleizes and became one of the pioneers of Modernist poster art. He developed simplified forms and composition in expressive colors for commercial advertising. He can be considered a precursor of Contemporary pop art. Carlu's poster for the 1937 Paris International Exposition features the white profile of a face representing Paris in the foreground. Composing the background are the national flags of the participants of the 1937 gathering, which was dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life. This brightly colored poster, dating from the tail end of Europe's inter-war period, encapsulates elements of the machine age aesthetic of the Art Deco period. The tricolor bull's eye on the profile of Paris alludes to the French flag and the Exposition's venue in the City of Light. Yet one cannot help but take notice the Nazi swastiker flag to the bull's eye's right, making the poster suggestive of the approach of World War II and the Fall of Paris to Hilter's Fascist troops but three years later. The 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life) ran from May 25th to November 25th. The Paris Musée de l'Homme and the Palais de Tokyo, which houses the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, were created for the 1937 exhibition. The Spanish, Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany pavilions were particularly notable. The Spanish pavilion attracted attention as the exposition took place during the Spanish Civil War and included a painting by Pablo Picasso, a sculpture by Alexander Calder, and a painting by Joan Miro, all on the subject of war. The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany pavilions were directly across from each other, and were the only two completed on the opening day of the exhibition. This, combined with the vast ideological differences between these two countries, also turned the exhibition into a competition between the two.
