About the Item

Etching on laid paper Inscribed in pencil: Épreuve tirée de la planche donnée personnellement par l’artiste pour la Société des Aquafortistes Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris A rare and charming etching by Jean François Raffaëlli, La Mort du Chat Murr (“The Death of the Cat Murr”) presents a humorous and anthropomorphic scene inspired by the whimsical traditions of 19th-century satire, and recalled in the tale of Ernst Theodor Hoffman. The print shows a solemn gathering of cats surrounding the bed of a deceased feline, rendered with a mixture of sentimentality and irony. Raffaëlli’s keen eye for character and setting—traits that would later define his depictions of Parisian street life—are already apparent here. The delicate hatching and controlled chiaroscuro reveal the artist’s technical finesse and narrative sensibility, while the intimate interior evokes the world of Daumier and the satirical spirit of Grandville. The inscription notes that this impression was personally given by Raffaëlli to the Société des Aquafortistes, a key institution in the 19th-century revival of etching in France. Condition: Excellent impression with rich black ink and full margins; faint scattered foxing in the margins, otherwise pristine. Provenance: Gift from the artist to the Société des Aquafortistes; subsequently in a private collection, Italy. Note: Jean François Raffaëlli, a painter, printmaker, and sculptor, was celebrated for his acute observation of contemporary life and psychological realism. While best known for his depictions of working-class Parisians, his early etchings often explore allegorical and anecdotal subjects such as this one, imbued with humor and empathy.
