In Vue de la ville de Maassluis (Hollande), Johan Barthold Jongkind captures a quintessentially Dutch winter scene with poetic simplicity and atmospheric finesse. The composition unfolds along a frozen canal, where skaters glide in the clear winter light beneath an expansive sky. A windmill, solitary and monumental, anchors the left side of the image, its diagonal lines counterbalancing the distant silhouette of Maassluis and its church spire.
Jongkind’s etched line—at once brisk and lyrical—reveals his exceptional gift for conveying air, light, and movementthrough the most economical means. The sparse yet dynamic composition embodies the transition from realism to impressionism: the artist’s sensitivity to tonal atmosphere and the fleeting effects of light anticipate the innovations of Monet, whom he mentored.
This etching stands among Jongkind’s most celebrated plates, uniting topographical accuracy with emotional immediacy. The viewer is drawn into the tranquil rhythm of Dutch life—windmill, ice, sky, and human figures harmonized within a landscape of quiet modern poetry.
Excellent impression on laid paper with full margins. Subtle time toning to the outer sheet, otherwise in superb condition. Rich, even inking with strong plate tone.
A pioneering figure in 19th-century landscape art, Johan Barthold Jongkind bridged the Dutch tradition of tonal realism with the emerging sensibility of French Impressionism. A close associate of Eugène Boudin and early mentor to Claude Monet, Jongkind brought to etching the same spontaneous freshness that defined his plein-air painting. His prints, such as Vue de la ville de Maassluis, celebrate the luminous atmosphere of the Netherlands, distilled through the eye of a modern artist attuned to light and transience.

Johan Barthold Jongkind
Johan Barthold Jongkind (Lattrop, 1819 – 1891, La Côte-Saint-André) was a Dutch painter, watercolorist, draftsman, etcher and lithographer. He lived most of his life in France.
After an aborted notary training, he attended the Haagsche Teeken-Academie, where he had enrolled in 1837. His teachers awarded him a scholarship as he was impotent and apparently very talented. Andreas Schelfhout became his teacher there. When the French painter Eugène Isabey came to The Hague in 1845, Schelfhout recommended his pupil to the French master. He invited Jongkind to Paris to work in his studio. A year later he went there in possession of a royal subsidy, which he had received from the Prince of Orange, later King William III. Jongkind soon enjoyed some success in the French Salons.
Jongkind painted 'after nature', but for him that meant that he made watercolours on the spot and later developed them into a painting in his studio.
After Vincent van Gogh, Johan Barthold Jongkind is considered the Netherlands' most influential 19th-century painter.
