In La Ville et la Campagne (“The City and the Countryside”), Jules-Ferdinand Jacquemart juxtaposes two distinct yet harmonious visions of modern life — the dense urban rooftops of Paris and the tranquil expanse of a rural riverbank. This diptych-like composition captures the duality of 19th-century existence, reflecting both industrial vitality and the enduring serenity of nature.
Jacquemart, one of the most technically accomplished etchers of his generation, demonstrates here his consummate control of line. The upper vignette, depicting the rhythmic geometry of city rooftops and chimneys, contrasts with the lower image’s fluid reflections and soft horizon. Through subtle variations in hatching and tonal density, Jacquemart masterfully evokes the different atmospheres of two worlds separated by space but united by light.
