About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: J. Michelin Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Près le Pont de Croissy, Jules Michelin depicts a tranquil stretch of riverbank enveloped in lush vegetation, rendered with delicate gradations of tone and exquisite attention to natural detail. The artist’s mastery of etching is evident in his fluid handling of light and shadow, transforming the calm water surface—flecked with reflections and lily pads—into a mirror of the summer sky above. Michelin’s work conveys the peaceful intimacy of nature near Croissy-sur-Seine, a favored site for landscape artists of the 19th century. The delicate interplay of fine lines, combined with a refined sense of atmosphere, anticipates the quiet lyricism of the Impressionists. His interpretation of the French countryside is both faithful and poetic, infused with a reverence for the harmony of land, water, and light. Superb impression on laid paper with full margins. Minor age-related toning to outer edges, otherwise in excellent condition. Jules Michelin was among the most talented etchers of the mid-19th century and a key contributor to the revival of original etching under Alfred Cadart. A pupil of Jean-Dominique Ingres, he combined classical precision with the Romantic sensibility of the Barbizon School. His landscapes, often centered on serene waterways and wooded paths, reflect an intimate observation of nature filtered through an artistic temperament both technical and poetic. Près le Pont de Croissy stands among his most accomplished landscape etchings, balancing structural clarity with lyrical tranquility.
