In Habitation dans les Landes (“Dwelling in the Landes”), Léo Drouyn offers a masterful study of rural France, depicting a thatched timber house nestled amid the pine forests and marshy plains of the Landes region in southwestern France. Smoke curls gently from the chimney as figures move about their daily routines, bringing human warmth to an otherwise untamed natural landscape.
Drouyn’s refined etching technique — characterized by crisp linear articulation and subtle gradations of texture — captures both the rustic simplicity of the architecture and the vast, moody atmosphere of the land. A painter, architect, and printmaker from Bordeaux, Léo Drouyn devoted much of his artistic life to documenting the architecture and landscapes of Aquitaine. A member of the Société des Aquafortistes, he contributed to the 19th-century revival of original etching as a medium for artistic expression.
