This rare proof sheet combines two early etchings by Léon Lhermitte—Devant le Feu (Before the Fire) and Au Village—both superb examples of the artist’s intimate realism. With remarkable control of light and shadow, Lhermitte depicts moments from rural life: a peasant seated before a hearth, and a group of villagers gathered around a table in convivial exchange. These compositions capture the warmth and dignity of everyday existence, themes that would define the artist’s later paintings and establish his reputation among the leading figures of French naturalism. Issued as part of the Société des Aquafortistes editions under the direction of Cadart
Luquet, these etchings illustrate Lhermitte’s early mastery of the medium.
Fine, rich impressions with full margins; minor foxing and handling marks to sheet edges, not affecting the platemarks; overall very good condition.
