A superb early etching by Léon Lhermitte, Le Lutrin (“The Lectern”) presents a solemn interior scene of clerics gathered around a music stand, their faces illuminated by the dim glow of candlelight. The composition’s strong chiaroscuro and rich linear cross-hatching demonstrate Lhermitte’s exceptional command of etching technique and his sensitivity to atmosphere. The figures, rendered with psychological depth and quiet realism, anticipate the artist’s later interest in the dignity and austerity of working life.

Léon Lhermitte was one of the leading French realist painters and printmakers of his generation. His etchings combine academic draughtsmanship with a deep empathy for human subjects, characteristics that would define his later masterpieces such as La paye des moissonneurs (1882).
