A fine and atmospheric etching by Léon Lhermitte depicting the tomb of the Romantic writer François-René de Chateaubriand on the tidal island of Grand Bé, off the coast of Saint-Malo. Executed with remarkable sensitivity to light and movement, Lhermitte captures the drama of the Breton seascape—the swirling motion of the waves, the rugged rock formations, and the distant island resting beneath turbulent skies. The work belongs to the series of etchings published by the Société des Aquafortistes, founded by Cadart to promote original prints by leading French artists of the period.
Excellent impression with full margins; minor toning and faint handling marks consistent with age; otherwise in very good condition.
