Lyonel Feininger was born in New York in 1871. From 1887 he studied at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts, and from 1888 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1890/91, he was a student at the Jesuit College in Liège. In 1891, he visited the Schlabitz studio in Berlin and finally continued his studies at the Berlin Academy. In 1892, Feininger traveled to Paris for the first time and attended the Académie Colarossi.
His early work was dominated by his activity as a caricature artist. From 1889, Lyonel Feininger drew for the "Humoristische Blätter" and other Berlin newspapers, and from 1894 for the New York publishers Harper Brothers. From 1895, he worked for the weekly supplement "Ulk" of the "Berliner Tageblatt," and in 1897/98 he was permanently employed there. In 1897/98, he also drew for the Lustige Blätter, and in 1898 for the Narrenschiff. In 1906/07, his picture stories appeared in the Comic Supplement of the Chicago Tribune. In 1904, Feininger's drawings and caricatures were shown at the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin.
From 1906 to 1908, Lyonel Feininger lived in Paris. Here he met Robert Delaunay, whose art greatly impressed him. He created his first paintings, which Lyonel Feininger presented for the first time in 1910 at the 20th exhibition of the "Berliner Secession" and in the "Salon des Artistes Indépendants." Here he also encountered the Cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
In 1912, the artist came into contact with the "Brücke" artists. In 1913, he created paintings with motifs from the Thuringian villages around Weimar, including the first painting of Gelmeroda, whose church can be seen in numerous of his paintings.
In 1917, Herwart Walden organized the first solo exhibition of Feininger's paintings in his gallery "Der Sturm." Walter Gropius appointed Feininger as master of the graphic arts workshop at the Bauhaus. In 1919, he designed the title woodcut "Cathedral of Socialism" for the "Bauhaus Manifesto." From 1921 to 1924, under his direction, the first Bauhaus portfolios with "New European Graphic Art" were created. After the Bauhaus moved, Feininger lived in Dessau from 1926 to 1933. Although he was still a master, he had no teaching obligations. In 1926, he, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Alexej von Jawlensky formed the exhibition group "Blaue Vier" (Blue Four). From 1929 to 1931, he worked on the Halle paintings.
Lyonel Feininger's life's work comprises approximately 1,500 caricatures and illustrations, as well as 539 paintings, 320 woodcuts, 65 etchings, 20 lithographs, and several hundred watercolors and drawings.
In 1937, Lyonel Feininger returned to his country of birth. In the same year, 378 of his works were shown in the exhibition "Degenerate Art." In the USA, Feininger was elected president of the Federation of American Painters and Sculptors in 1947. Lyonel Feininger died in New York in 1956.

Lyonel Feininger
Lionel Feininger (1871–1956), a German-American painter, graphic artist, and caricaturist, developed a distinctive style influenced by Cubism and Expressionism. Born in New York City but raised in Germany, Feininger honed his skills at the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts before studying under renowned artists in Berlin. Initially associated with the avant-garde group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), Feininger's style evolved over time, gravitating towards Cubism after being inspired by artists like Picasso and Braque. His participation in the "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) exhibition in 1911 further solidified his reputation as an essential figure in the Expressionist movement. Returning to the United States during World War I, Feininger became associated with the American avant-garde, though the Nazis later targeted his works in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition. Feininger experimented with various mediums throughout his career, producing bold and vibrant works depicting urban landscapes and architectural motifs. His legacy as a pioneer of modern art continues to resonate, with his contributions to Cubism, Expressionism, and abstract art celebrated worldwide. Feininger passed away in 1956, leaving behind a rich and influential body of work.
