Cette lithographie en forme d’éventail représente une jeune élégante de la Belle Époque, accoudée à une petite table devant un livre entrouvert et un bouquet de fleurs. Elle semble perdue dans ses pensées, tandis qu’en arrière-plan de petits personnages, vêtus de tenues d’une autre époque que la sienne, dansent la farandole devant le Moulin-Rouge. L’artiste a sans doute cherché à nous donner à voir ce que la jeune femme est en train de lire, ou bien le souvenir qu’elle a d’un bal costumé au Moulin Rouge, comme celui donné en 1902 pour le dessinateur Gavarni lors duquel les participants avaient dû venir costumés comme au temps de ce dernier, c’est-à-dire la Monarchie de Juillet (1830-1848), ou encore l’idée qu’elle se fait d’un spectacle auquel elle va assister. Le fait que Maurice Eliot ait laissé la partie gauche de l’éventail en réserve laisse penser qu’il a été conçu comme objet publicitaire ou pour servir de programme lors d’un bal. Compte tenu de sa datation, il aurait pu être créé pour le bal Monnier, organisé le 1er juin 1904 au Casino de Paris au profit de la caisse de secours des Dessinateurs humoristes. Cette fête marqua la date de création de l’Association des Dessinateurs humoristes, dont la présidence fut confiée à Charles Léandre. Comptant parmi les meilleurs amis de Maurice Eliot, si bien que dans leur jeunesse leurs camarades les surnommaient « Héro et Léandre », Léandre a pu faire appel à lui pour concevoir un éventail à vendre comme souvenir de cette fête. Cette lithographie a été exposée à la Villa du Temps retrouvé de Cabourg entre mars et novembre 2023, dans le parcours Belle Époque.
