May Lesser graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from H. Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University with honors in drawing. She then earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama. She did further postgraduate work at Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University, where she studied anthropology and child psychiatry, respectively. She also studied printmaking at the University of California, Irvine.[2]
