About the Item

(after Baldassare Tommaso Peruzzi) Paris: Imprimerie Royale, c1730. Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks (olive, brown, tan), and aquatint on buff laid paper with a heart and crescent moon watermark, 12 15/16 x 8 1/16 inches (328 x 205 mm); sheet 14 x 9 1/8 inches (356 x 232 mm) one-inch margins. From a drawing by Baldassarre Tommaso Peruzzi. In very good condition with minor surface soiling and attenuation. Condition is consistent with age. A fine example of this work, which is plate No. 85 from the series Le Cabinet di Monsieur Crozat. Etching by Anne Claude Philippe de Tubières, Comte de Caylus. An impression of this fine work may be viewed in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object No. 60.708(3). A shepherd holding a lion on a leash in the foreground, in the middle ground the shepherd stands in a meadow surrounded by wild beasts, in the background the shepherd is seated on a rock with the lion at his side; from 'Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France, Cabinet Crozat' after a drawing by Baldassare Peruzzi.

The dramatic energy of the foreground, where hounds and hunters engage the beast, is heightened by the bold use of white heightening, which models the forms and enlivens the surface. The background, structured by tall trees and populated with additional hunting scenes, lends the composition a theatrical depth. Attributed to Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, this work belongs to the artistic context of Medicean Florence, where the artist developed an important body of hunting scenes intended for illustration and engraving. Influenced by Italian Renaissance models as well as his native Flemish culture, Stradanus excelled in dynamic storytelling and elegant draftsmanship.
