About the Item

This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Femme a la meche (Woman with the Lock of Hair), from the folio Les Bleus de Barcelone, 12 aquarelles et pastels (The Blues of Barcelona, 12 Watercolors and Pastels), originates from the 1963 edition published by Au Vent D'Arles, Paris, and Musee Picasso, Barcelona, and printed by Ateliers Daniel Jacomet, Paris, December 10, 1963. Femme a la meche captures Picassos poetic sensitivity to human emotion and introspection, evoking the delicate melancholy of his Blue Period while embodying the expressive confidence of his mature style. Through a fusion of watercolor transparency, pastel softness, and the precision of pochoir and lithography, the work conveys an atmosphere of quiet contemplation and lyrical beauty. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir with gouache and pastel inks on velin de Rives paper, archivally hinged on velin de Rives backing sheet, as issued, this work measures 21.34 x 16.5 inches (overall). Signed in the plate, as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Ateliers Daniel Jacomet, Paris. About the Publication: Les Bleus de Barcelone, 12 aquarelles et pastels (The Blues of Barcelona, 12 Watercolors and Pastels), published in 1963 by Au Vent D'Arles, Paris, and Musee Picasso, Barcelona, is among the most refined and poetic graphic suites of Picassos later career. Conceived as a visual homage to the artists youth in Barcelona, the folio revisits the palette and sentiment of his early Blue Period while reinterpreting them through the mature, confident lyricism of his later years. Printed by Ateliers Daniel Jacomet—renowned for their mastery of fine art reproduction and pochoir printing—the suite combines lithography, pochoir, and gouache effects to achieve a painterly vibrancy that captures the atmosphere and emotional resonance of Picassos original works on paper. The project was completed on December 10, 1963, with typography by l'Imprimerie Union, Paris, and includes twelve plates that blend watercolor delicacy with chromatic richness. Limited to D examples plus XL hors commerce copies, Les Bleus de Barcelone stands as a testament to Picassos ongoing dialogue between memory and invention, uniting the spirit of his early Spanish years with the expressive freedom of his mature artistic vision. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picassos career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) achieved a record-breaking sale of 179,365,000 USD at Christie's, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picassos enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history. Woman in Blue , Nuremberg, Nahuel Huapi region, Argentina
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'H. Lauer' for Hans Lauer, (Argentine-German, 1902-1989) and dated 1965. Hans Lauer emerges as a sympathetic chronicler of Patagonian light, a German-born landscapist who made Argentina his country and Bariloche his enduring motif. Born in Nuremberg in 1902, he emigrated to Argentina in 1920 and fixed his practice in the Nahuel Huapi region, painting the blue-white atmospheres of the lake basin and the sheltering stands of native forest with a direct, self-taught hand; he remained rooted there until his death in Bariloche in 1989. Contemporary reports place him working across northern Patagonia—San Martín de los Andes among his circuits—where he translated the temperate Andean palette into sober oils and watercolors keyed to weather and season rather than to metropolitan fashions. Autodidact by formation, he belongs to that émigré cohort who stitched European discipline to local terrain, and by the 1950s–60s his production reflects an assured, observational plein-air habit that privileges structure over effect. While Bariloche provided the studio and the subject, his name also circulates in Buenos Aires contexts through collectors and dealers who sought Patagonian views during the mid-century tourism boom, an afterlife that helped keep his vistas in the market even as he remained geographically anchored to the south. Within the regional history of Argentine painting...
