About the Item

The shepherds  is a contemporary artwork realized by Remo Brindisi in  the 1980s. Screenprint on paper. Hand signed on the right margin. Edition XLVII/L prints.  In very good conditions. Colorful and touching artwork representing a genre scene.  Remo Brindisi (Rome, 1918-Lido di Spina, Ferrara, 1996) is considered one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century. Involved in the artistic environment since childhood - at the Penne School of Art, where his father taught sculpture, and then enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and in the Institute of Art for Book Illustration. He fought with the Italian army during the Second World War and moved to Florence where he came into contact with many artists of the time such as Carena, Soffici and Rosai. His painting is strongly expressionist, with informal tendencies, and imbued with social and political purposes. The recurring subjects are motherhood, shepherd children, opponents and the Venetians, represented as nightmares, the result of an analysis of the suffering caused by the traumatic events of the war, horror and guilt. The Milanese years (since 1947) are characterized by a cubist flattening, the result of the controversy between realists and abstractionists and its integration into the "Linea" group. The themes dealt with testify to collective suffering assuming an epic character. Famous are the two cycles "La via Crucis" (1956-1957) and the "History of Fascism" (1957-1962). In 1970 he founded the "Alternative Museum" in Lido di Spina, where he collected works by contemporary Italian and foreign artists; moreover, he was appointed president of the Milan Triennale and was awarded the gold medal of public education for cultural merits.
