Shepard Fairey has long been a devoted fan of Circle Jerks, one of the first hardcore punk bands he experienced live when they performed in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1986. That formative experience helped shape Fairey’s appreciation for punk’s raw energy, independence, and uncompromising ethos.
Decades later, Fairey was honored to create this print commemorating Keith Morris’s 70th birthday concert in Los Angeles. The event brought together an influential lineup—including Ceremony, Rocket From The Crypt, and Negative Approach—celebrating Morris’s enduring impact on punk and hardcore music.
The work reflects both personal admiration and cultural respect, merging Fairey’s signature graphic language with the rebellious spirit that defined Morris’s career. "I first heard Social Distortion in 1985, and I was immediately struck by their punk power and rebellious themes delivered with an undeniable melodic appeal. I begged my parents to buy me the first Social Distortion album “Mommy’s Little Monster.” My parents hated punk, so when they asked me if the music was punk, I lied and said “no, it’s New Wave.” I listened to the album non-stop and a lot of the themes… freedom, generation gaps, questioning authority, sub-cultural community, etc… really resonated with me.
