About the Item

Shepard Fairey Decay Reset Screen Print on 80# Cream Speckletone paper Year: 2025 Size: 24 x 18 inches (60.96 x 45.72 cm) Edition: 450 Signed, dated and numbered by hand COA provided *Edition number may vary from the image shown. Nearly three decades after their first intersection, the worlds of Obey Giant and Lodown Magazine converge once again. In the mid-1990s, Shepard Fairey and Thomas Marecki—also known as “Marok”—crossed paths in San Diego at a moment when both were still shaping their creative identities. Lodown Magazine was in its early stages, and Fairey’s artistic trajectory was only beginning to take form. What united them was a shared urgency: to disrupt complacency, to fuse activism with culture, and to build independent platforms outside established systems. Their respective backgrounds—ranging from Cold War-era West Berlin to 1990s Southern California—were informed by signals of freedom transmitted across borders, cultures, and subcultures. These influences fostered a restless drive to question authority and challenge dominant narratives through art, publishing, and self-initiated action. Today, those signals appear fragmented. Fairey situates this work within a broader moment of cultural and political rupture, marked by eroded trust, institutional failure, and the collapse of assumed global stability. Rather than offering nostalgia, the artwork confronts the present: a period defined by decay, but also by the necessity of renewal. The composition frames decay as a warning and reset as a collective challenge. For Fairey, meaningful change does not originate from entrenched power structures, but from the ground up—through art, unfiltered voices, and newly forged networks of resistance and connection. The work functions as both reflection and provocation, asserting that the moment for recalibration is not approaching—it has already arrived.
