About the Item

Shepard Fairey Icarus Pride Screen print on thick cream Speckletone paper Year: 2022 Size: 36 x 24 inches (91.4 × 61.0 cm) Edition: 500 Signed by Shepard Fairey, dated and numbered by hand COA provided *Edition number may vary from the image shown. Shepard Fairey draws on the ancient Greek fable of Icarus to frame a contemporary warning about power, ego, and environmental responsibility. In the myth, Icarus constructs wings of wax and feathers and is cautioned by his father not to fly too close to the sun. Ignoring this advice, he succumbs to hubris, flies too high, and ultimately perishes when his wings melt and he falls into the sea. The story endures as a cautionary tale about the dangers of allowing ego and overconfidence to eclipse judgment. The title Dominatio Terrae translates as “dominion over the earth,” a phrase Fairey uses to draw a parallel between Icarus’s reckless ambition and humanity’s modern relationship with the planet. Like Icarus, humankind has become intoxicated by power, technological control, and short-term gain, often failing to recognize how these forces destabilize the very ecosystems that sustain life. Fairey positions the work as a call for humility—acknowledging humanity’s place within a fragile ecological balance—as well as a demand for concrete action in the face of environmental degradation. A portion of the proceeds from this print benefits Greenpeace USA, supporting its ongoing efforts to combat climate change and environmental exploitation. Through this work, Fairey connects mythology, moral reflection, and activism, reinforcing the idea that awareness must be matched with responsibility if destructive trajectories are to be reversed. Icarus myth, Dominatio Terrae, environmental warning, climate change art, ecological responsibility, hubris and power, mythology in contemporary art, environmental activism, planetary stewardship, climate crisis symbolism, moral allegory, sustainability message, human impact on nature, cautionary narrative, activist artwork Shepard Fairey, Obey Giant, contemporary street art, graphic iconography, activist art, pop culture symbolism, editioned print, contemporary urban art, collectible fine art print, social commentary art

"This print is a comment on the relationship between corporate greed, fossil fuels, and the warming of the planet and collapsing ecosystems. Standard operating, pushed by players like Standard Oil and its many offshoots, should be redefined as sub-standard. If we want to maintain the standard of health our planet needs to avoid catastrophe, we can't allow big oil to put profits before the planet and profits before people (as well as many other threatened species). Keep in mind that big oil, which is already very profitable, is subsidized by you, the taxpayer, for up to $50 billion per year. In contrast, renewable energy sources are subsidized for only a quarter of that amount. We need to push for change." -Shepard Fairey A portion of proceeds from this print went to Greenpeace USA.
