With his ICONS exhibition as context, Shepard Fairey chose to honor Joe Strummer—the lead singer, lyricist, and philosophical force behind The Clash, whom Fairey considers his all-time favorite band. Strummer stands as a personal hero to Fairey not only for his music and incisive lyrics, but for his wit, compassion for the underdog, and unwavering stance against injustice. Central to Strummer’s enduring influence is the phrase “The future is unwritten,” a mantra that continues to guide Fairey’s own creative and ethical outlook.
As a teenager immersed in punk’s raw fury, Fairey found that Strummer infused the genre with heart and intellect, demonstrating that anger without purpose leads nowhere. Strummer’s work revealed punk as a vehicle for conscience, clarity, and meaningful resistance—values that matured alongside Fairey’s own worldview. This artwork was created in collaboration with photographer Jenny Lens, whose candid documentation of the early punk scene remains unparalleled.
The image is based on a spontaneous photograph taken by Lens backstage at The Clash’s performance at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on March 4, 1980. Captured during a moment of access rarely granted, the photograph reveals Strummer’s expressive intensity and quiet resolve. Lens, who has long cited “Know Your Rights” and “The future is unwritten” as guiding principles, recognized in Fairey’s interpretation a precise distillation of the power and beauty embedded in her original image.
