Shepard Fairey’s connection to Motörhead began through punk culture, sparked by seeing members of G.B.H. wearing Motörhead T-shirts emblazoned with the band’s iconic “Snaggletooth” logo. The first song Fairey heard was “Ace of Spades,” a track that defied easy categorization—equal parts punk, metal, and hard rock—but unmistakably powerful. Its defiant lyric, “You know I was born to lose… I don’t wanna live forever,” stands as an outlaw manifesto that perfectly encapsulates the band’s ethos.
While Motörhead’s catalog is filled with enduring classics—Overkill, Bomber, No Class, Damage Case, and more—“Ace of Spades” remained the band’s inevitable encore. Fairey saw Motörhead perform numerous times over the years and recalls them as consistently ferocious, relentless, and unequivocally the loudest band he had ever experienced. Over four decades of recording and touring, Motörhead established itself as one of the most reliable and uncompromising institutions in rock music.
At the center stood founder, bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Lemmy Kilmister, as iconic as the Snaggletooth emblem itself. Lemmy embodied the hard-rock creed to the very end, clad in his unmistakable uniform of denim, leather, cowboy boots, and handlebar mustache. Though his death was a shock, his legacy endures—through the music, the imagery, and the uncompromising spirit Motörhead continues to represent.
