More than three decades ago, while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, Shepard Fairey authored a paper originally titled A Social and Psychological Explanation of Andre the Giant Has a Posse for a course examining human factors and environmental controls in architecture. As an illustration major, Fairey drew from his own medium, focusing on what was then a nascent sticker project that would later become foundational to his career.
The paper was eventually condensed into a single-page text—distributed alongside stickers—and renamed his manifesto. During the research process, Fairey encountered Martin Heidegger’s theory of phenomenology, a philosophical framework that resonated deeply and would come to define his artistic direction. At the time, the Andre the Giant Has a Posse campaign was only a year old, yet it was already provoking a broad spectrum of reactions and questions.
Fairey became fascinated by the idea that small, mischievous acts of visual disruption could interrupt routine, complacency, and boredom—momentarily awakening viewers to their surroundings. Phenomenology, in this sense, became the conceptual seed from which his entire practice would grow. While sticker dissemination marked the beginning, Fairey’s enduring ambition has been to explore every possible platform for phenomenological engagement.
This print serves as a reflection on the philosophical origins of Fairey’s work—a reminder that his art has always been rooted in perception, inquiry, and the power of imagery to challenge passive consumption. It stands as both a retrospective and a gesture of gratitude to those who have participated in and supported the journey.

A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of prints, posters, stickers and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon.
