About the Item

Shepard Fairey Sadistic Dog Walker Screenprint on thick cream Speckletone paper Year: 2021 Size: 36 x 24 inches (91.4 × 61.0 cm) each Edition: 450 Signed by Francisco Reyes Jr. Shepard Fairey, dated and numbered by hand COA provided *Edition number may vary from the image shown. Matching numbers. Shepard Fairey has created numerous works over the years confronting the realities of police brutality, often employing humor and absurdity as tools to make difficult subjects more accessible without diminishing their seriousness. Sadistic Dog Walker continues this approach by juxtaposing two starkly different lived realities. The image references the violent historical use of police dogs against civil rights protesters, a legacy that stands in sharp contrast to the carefree, insulated experience of dog ownership within predominantly white and affluent communities. The work highlights the unequal application of power and force, drawing attention to the ways policing disproportionately impacts non-white and lower-income communities. Fairey frames the image as a reflection on the existence of “two Americas,” where privilege allows some to remain detached from abuses that others experience routinely. Humor becomes a strategic entry point—inviting viewers in before confronting them with the underlying discomfort and moral tension embedded in the subject matter. Artist and collaborator Francisco Reyes Jr., who has long admired Fairey’s police-brutality works, played a role in advancing the conceptual lineage behind the piece. Building on earlier works such as Sadistic Florist, Reyes encouraged the continuation of the “public servant with a subversive twist” narrative. The intentionally provocative tagline—“My Dog Walker Is a Dick”—operates as a disarming hook, softening the initial encounter while preserving the work’s sharp critique and lingering bite. Together, the collaboration underscores the power of satire to expose injustice, using wit not to trivialize harm, but to force sustained engagement with uncomfortable truths.
