Shepard Fairey created this tribute to honor Terry Hall, the iconic singer of The Specials and one of Fairey’s most deeply admired musicians. Hall passed away from pancreatic cancer less than a year prior, and his loss resonated profoundly across generations of artists and fans. In tribute, Musack organized a remarkable celebration of Hall’s life and influence, bringing together an extraordinary group of musicians, including Horace Panter and Lynval Golding of The Specials, Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go’s, members of Fishbone and No Doubt, Tom Morello, Tim Armstrong and Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy, Donita Sparks of L7, and others.
Fairey first discovered The Specials in the summer of 1989, around the same time he was immersing himself in the music of Operation Ivy and Fishbone. Seeing artists from all of these formative bands come together to honor Terry Hall underscored the breadth of Hall’s cultural impact. Fairey was invited to create the artwork for the event, referencing a striking photograph by Chalkie Davies, resulting in two distinct editions: one incorporating the event lineup, and a second, more minimalist tribute focused solely on Hall.
The black-and-white edition was produced in an edition of 325, while the version including the event lineup was limited to 300, reflecting the significant number distributed at the tribute itself. Proceeds from the lineup edition benefited Musack, a music education charity dedicated to supporting children through creative expression.
On a personal level, Fairey and Hall spent meaningful time together during visits to Fairey’s studio, engaging in long conversations about creativity, mental health, relationships, parenthood, and the emotional complexities of life. Fairey remembers Hall as kind, thoughtful, and deeply open—a kindred spirit whose honesty and humanity left a lasting impression. This artwork was created with gratitude, respect, and affection, standing as a heartfelt acknowledgment of Hall’s music, spirit, and enduring legacy.
