The Tranquility of Solitude (Paul Weller) is a print by Shepard Fairey that reflects the formative influence of punk rock on his artistic and political consciousness. As a teenager, Fairey found in punk not only a visceral soundtrack, but a rebellious and self-sustaining creative ecosystem—an alternative to the conformity of mainstream culture. Among the British punk bands that resonated most deeply with him was The Jam, alongside contemporaries such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash.
At the center of The Jam’s evolution was Paul Weller, whose role as frontman and principal songwriter left a lasting mark on British music of the 1970s and 1980s. Fairey views Weller as a singular figure whose work bridged punk energy with the stylistic and melodic legacy of earlier mod pioneers like The Kinks and The Who. This lineage informed not only Weller’s fashion sensibility, but also a songwriting approach that distinguished The Jam from many of their punk contemporaries.
The print acknowledges the band’s musical progression—from the raw urgency of In the City to increasingly nuanced compositions marked by beauty, introspection, and melancholy, alongside moments of explosive energy. Fairey celebrates this full spectrum as integral to Weller’s enduring impact.
The portrait was created in collaboration with photographer Steve Rapport, whose work Fairey has long admired. Rapport’s photographic archive includes seminal images of artists such as Joe Strummer, GBH, Discharge, and Terry Hall, making him a fitting collaborator for this tribute. The title, The Tranquility of Solitude, is drawn from a lyric in The Jam’s song That’s Entertainment, a shared favorite of both Fairey and Rapport, and encapsulates the reflective undercurrent running through Weller’s work.
