About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower right: T. Chauvel Published by Cadart Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Passage de la Ternoise, Théophile Chauvel captures a moment of pastoral calm along the Ternoise River in northern France. The etching presents a tranquil composition: cows wade into the water beneath the sweeping boughs of riverside trees, while a distant herdsman watches over the scene. The composition opens toward the luminous horizon, balancing rich linear detail with broad, atmospheric space. Chauvel’s mastery lies in his ability to fuse realism with lyricism. His etched line is delicate yet sure, describing textures of bark, foliage, and flowing water without sacrificing lightness or rhythm. The tranquil balance between animals, nature, and human presence evokes both the Barbizon School’s reverence for the rural landscape and the artist’s own meditative temperament. The etching exemplifies Chauvel’s dedication to translating the subtle tonal gradations of light—a quality that would later make him one of the foremost interpreters of 19th-century landscape painting through print. Fine, crisp impression on laid paper with full margins. Light natural toning and minimal foxing in outer edges; image in superb condition with deep plate tone and clear contrasts. Théophile-Narcisse Chauvel was a key figure in the revival of etching in 19th-century France. Closely associated with the Barbizon painters, he produced both original works and reproductive engravings after masters such as Corot and Millet. In Passage de la Ternoise, Chauvel demonstrates his independent artistic voice—serene, precise, and imbued with pastoral poetry. His prints celebrate nature not as spectacle but as an enduring rhythm of life, quietly harmonized between land, animal, and air.
