About the Item

Aquatint with hand coloring in oil color on smooth wove paper, 10 5/8 x 7 3/8 inches (270 x 187 mm), full margins. Laid down to a support, as issued. Moderate toning and surface soiling, scattered light spots of foxings on the support, and some in the image. Colors are fresh. Printed by Charles Hullmandel. This image, which was produced entirely by means of lithography, was printed in oil color, and appears exactly as it was pulled from the press. It represents part of the first real challenge to the supremacy in England of the hand colored aquatint as a media, which is an older technique in which the hand coloring is applied after the image is pulled from the press. An impression of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from color blindness. Although now little-known in the English-speaking world, he is generally recognized as the most significant etcher of 19th century France. His most famous works by him are a series of views powerfully conveying his distinctive Gothic vision of Paris. He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. Meryon had sketched in Athens, Algiers and other exotic places he had visited, and by late 1840 decided to take lessons in drawing from the Toulon...
